He Was Born in 1916, In The State Of Dumraon, Bihar. He Was The Second Of Mitthan and Paigambar Khan. He Was Born In a Family Which had Musical Background, His Forefather Were Legendary Musicians Of Bhojpur. At The Age Of Six, He Moved From Bihar To Varanasi also Known Banaras and his Uncle Introduced him to Shehnai and Became his Mentor and Guided him to Learn Shehnai. He Was Awarded Highest Civilians Award  Bharat Ratna, in 2001. Becoming The 3rd Singer classical musician after M. S. Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar to be accorded this distinction.
